opening ceremony
Ceremony which opens the Olympic Games. The ceremony takes place in the Olympic stadium not earlier than one day before the competitions of the Games of the Olympiad and of the Olympic Winter Games. The ceremony is held in accordance with the protocol decided by the IOC. It should reflect and portray the humanistic principles of Olympism and contribute to the spread of these ideals. (See Olympic Charter Rules 56, 57)

На церемонии закрытия Игр за четыре года до начала следующих Игр официальный Олимпийский флаг передается из настоящего города-организатора в следующий город-организатор. По традиции, мэр следующего города-организатора летит назад домой с официальным флагом. По прибытии организуется масштабная общественная церемония по приветствию Олимпийского флага на территории следующего города-организатора (за четыре года до начала игр). В соответствии с протоколом и традицией, официальный флаг должен быть выставлен в офисе мэра в течение последующих четырех лет. Подлинный официальный флаг помещается в сейф для сохранности, а на обозрение выставляется копия.

flag arrival
At the closing ceremony of the Games four years prior, the official Olympic flag is transferred from the current host city to the next host city. It is customary for the Mayor of the next host city to fly back home with the official flag. Upon arrival, there is a large public and press ceremony to welcome the Olympic flag to the next host city (four years before their Games). According to protocol and tradition, the official flag is to be displayed in Mayor’s office for the following four years. The real official flag is placed in a safety deposit box, while a replica is put on public display.
